Inserting cross-references into a document

In formal documents, all images need a numbered caption and must be cross-referenced in the text.

Follow these steps:

  1. Locate in the cursor in your text where you require the cross-reference
  2. Click the "Annotation" icon to open the menu
  3. Click the "Cross-reference" icon to open the menu
  4. Select the image caption you wish to cross-reference from the drop down list
  5. Customize the cross-reference menu; as required
    • Prefix is text that appears before an image label
    • Brackets are typically round, but an inline cross-reference will have no brackets
    • Location simply adds some text 'above', or 'below' and the image label
    • A suffix is added at the end
    • Example (see Figure 1 below as an example)
  6. Click "Insert" to add the cross-reference
  7. Hover over the cross-reference and a popup menu allowing you to edit or delte the cross-reference

Tips:

  • Every image needs a numbered caption; except if it is a blog
  • Every image should be cross-referenced in text to let the reader know when to look at the image
